Learning Influences

At Little Spark we strive to integrate inclusion and diversity in all aspects of learning. Books, songs and relevant  materials are displayed around our classrooms to facilitate the teaching of culture and differences. Class activities and intentional teaching moments allow our students to honor other cultures and celebrate differences. By creating accessible spaces in the classroom for all students to enjoy, every can actively participate and feel included.

For our students with linguistic needs, we offer visual, verbal and auditory language supports. Our teachers understand that collaborating with parents and staff is crucial to the child's development. Creating opportunities for group work, language support and lesson previews, can often jumpstart a child's language skills (School of Education, 2020).

What if my child does not speak English?

For a typical English language learner, proper supports will be put in place such as visual aids and gestures to scaffold learning. At times, teachers may also use words in the child's native language to provide further understanding.

For an atypical English language learner, they will also receive the same supports, but may be evaluated by a bilingual speech-language pathologist to diagnose a possible speech delay. A culturally appropriate IEP may be developed to help the student reach their goals.
